Bias in the workplace refers to the unfair treatment of individuals based on their age, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and other factors. Biases can be conscious or unconscious and can lead to discrimination, exclusion, and a negative work culture.

In this blog, we will discuss how biases in the workplace can be detrimental to creating a culture of inclusivity and the establishment of a positive culture within the organization. We shall also look at the theoretical aspect that deals with situations of bias and how to overcome the issue.

Understanding the impact

One of the main reasons why biases are detrimental to creating a culture of inclusivity is that they can lead to discrimination and exclusion. According to a study by Harvard Business Review, biases can result in unequal opportunities for employees, which can lead to lower morale, decreased productivity, and higher turnover rates (Dobbin and Kalev, 2016). This is because employees are more likely to be disengaged and demotivated when they feel that their contributions are not valued or recognized.

Furthermore, biases can also lead to a lack of diversity in the workplace. According to the theory of similarity attraction, individuals are more likely to be attracted to and prefer those who are similar to themselves (Byrne,1961; Byrne et al.,1971). This can lead to a homogenous workplace, where employees have similar backgrounds and experiences, which can limit the company's ability to innovate and think creatively.

Tackling the bias syndrome head-on

To overcome biases in the workplace, companies need to implement policies and practices that promote diversity and inclusion. One contemporary human resources management theory that deals with situations of bias is the theory of unconscious bias. This theory suggests that individuals have unconscious biases that affect their behaviour and decision-making (Greenwald and Banaji, 1995). By raising awareness of these biases, companies can provide training and support to employees, which can lead to a more inclusive work culture.

Conclusion

In conclusion, biases in the workplace can be detrimental to creating a culture of inclusivity and the establishment of a positive culture within the organization. By creating policies and practices that promote diversity and inclusion, companies can overcome biases and create a more inclusive work environment. The theory of unconscious bias provides insight into how companies can provide training and support to employees to overcome biases and establish a more inclusive work culture.
